Cancer Screening
Overview
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but early detection through regular screening significantly increases the chances of effective treatment and long-term survival. At WakeUp Health, we are committed to promoting accessible, community-driven cancer awareness and screening services, particularly for populations that often face health disparities—such as women, men over 40, racialized communities, newcomers, low-income groups, and individuals with limited access to healthcare.
Women are particularly vulnerable to cancers such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer, which, when detected early, have highly treatable outcomes. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to face prostate cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal (colon) cancer, which are often diagnosed late due to lack of awareness or delayed screening.
Despite the availability of life-saving tests like mammograms, Pap smears, PSA tests, and colonoscopies, many individuals delay or avoid screening due to fear, stigma, misinformation, cultural taboos, or simply not knowing when or how to get tested. WakeUp Health works to eliminate these barriers through community education, mobile screening partnerships, and one-on-one support.
Awareness & Education
Awareness is the first line of defense against cancer. At WakeUp Health, we believe that clear, culturally sensitive, and community-rooted education can save lives. Our programs are designed to:
- Educate women about breast self-exams, the importance of regular mammograms, and Pap tests to detect cervical cancer
- Educate men—especially over age 40—on prostate health, lung cancer risks, and the importance of colorectal cancer screening
- Offer guidance on when to get screened, how often, and what to expect during procedures
- Dispel myths, fears, and misconceptions about cancer diagnosis and treatment
- Promote body awareness and encourage individuals to speak up when they notice changes
- Provide multilingual materials and workshops to engage culturally diverse and underserved communities
- Host community health talks, screening drives, and outreach events in local neighborhoods, schools, and places of worship
Through our education and outreach, we aim to normalize conversations about cancer, reduce fear, and empower individuals to take action for their health. Support, Recovery & Rehabilitation
WakeUp Health provides holistic support for individuals at every stage—whether they are attending their first screening, awaiting results, undergoing treatment, or recovering post diagnosis. Our wraparound services include:
- Navigation support to help individuals book screenings, access low-cost or free services, and understand their options
- Counseling and emotional support for individuals and families dealing with a diagnosis or the anxiety around it
- Referrals to specialized healthcare providers and cancer care clinics for follow up treatment and services
- Wellness education, including nutrition, exercise, and stress management for cancer prevention and recovery

We believe that every individual—regardless of gender, income, or background—deserves the chance to detect cancer early, seek treatment confidently, and recover with dignity and care.
